Everything you need to know about Apple’s iPhone 7 event

September 9, 2016

With many students owning old versions of the iPhone, Apple’s new iPhone 7 has brought a lot of buzz. In addition to the phone, Apple also released the second version of its smartwatch, the Apple Watch. Here’s everything that you need to know about these new products.

Apple Watch S2

The first thing that Apple released was new the Apple Watch, called the ‘Apple Watch Series 2’, or S2 for short. Although this new watch may look the same as its predecessor, it has a bunch of new features packed inside of it. The S2 is now “swim-proofed” and has a GPS unit built in, instead of using the phone’s GPS as it did in the original version. The S2 will come in the same colors as the original Apple Watch, but with a ceramic option in you have $1,500 to spend on a watch.

Apple also partnered with Nike and made a special version of the watch called ‘Apple Watch Nike+’. This edition is the exact same as the S2, but with a built in Nike+ Running App that will ask you, “Are we running today?” Additionally, it will track your friends goals and tell you day-by-day that, “Dave is running 2 miles more than you.” The watch will come in four different colors and a new band.

With the built in GPS and the ability to get a specialized Nike running version, the new Apple Watch could actually be a smartwatch that you can run with. Also, Apple has made a swimming workout that will track how many calories and how far you have swam.

The Apple Watch S2 will be available today and will ship on September 16. It will start at $369. The Nike+ Edition will be available for pre-order on Friday, Sept. 9, but will ship in late October. It will also be $369. To look more at the prices and features of each watch, check here.

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

As tradition, every year Apple releases its popular iPhone. This year, it has many different features that have been presented in the Apple Event.

The design of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will look very familiar to you because, well, they are. Apple hasn’t done a much redesigning for the iPhone 7. There are three major design changes to the iPhone 7 this year. First, Apple added black (no, not space grey) and jet black as new colors. Black will be more like the old space grey but with a black apple logo and jet black will be a glossy finish. Both of these colors will join the old silver, gold and rose gold. Second, those antenna lines on the back of the iPhone 6s have disappeared. Although it may not seem like it is a big deal, it makes the back of the iPhone 7 look more simple.

Lastly, R.I.P. headphone jack (1878-2016). After months of rumors that the headphone jack was going away on the iPhone 7, Apple finally confirmed it. But not to worry for all of you music listeners, a pair of the regular apple earpods will be included with the phone but instead of a headphone jack at the end, there will be a lightning cable. And if cables aren’t your thing, Apple will be selling wireless bluetooth earpods (now called AirPods) for $159. Although it may seem like a steep price, it does come with a 24 hour battery life and cool features such as when you take them out of your ear, the music will automatically pause. Luckily, apple will also include a lightning to headphone jack adapter so you can still plug in your old headphones.

This extinction of the headphone jack will open up room for stereo speakers on the iPhone 7 that will be twice as loud as the iPhone 6s. Also, the 7 has a new 12 mp camera with optical image stabilization and a 7 mp front facing camera. Although the 7 might not have anything new in the camera department, the 7 Plus does. It includes two lenses making it “two cameras that shoot as one.” The 7 Plus will be the phone for you if want a phone with strong camera capabilites. It will have optical zoom at 2x and digital zoom at a massive 10x. With the dual cameras, every shot will have twice as much detail.

The new iPhone will have the same display, but will be 25% brighter and will be water resistant. Inside of the phone will be a new chip that promises to have the longest battery life and will be twice as fast as the iPhone 6. The best part is, all iPhones will be shipped with IOS 10 pre-downloaded.

The iPhone 7 will start at $199 for a 32 GB, and move up $100 for the 128 GB and 256 GB versions. The 7 Plus will start at $299 and move up $100 for the other storage options. Pre-orders start today and phones will ship next Friday. To learn more about the prices and features look here.
