Football Week One vs Prep (Highlights) from Warrior Television on Vimeo.

An estimated 6,500 people piled into Burke Stadium on Friday night for the first varsity football game of Westside’s season. Starting junior quarterback Dylan Plautz and the rest of the football team warmed up for their season opener against school rival Creighton Prep with weeks of practice and anticipation in their back pockets.

The game started strong for the Warriors. They traded off possessions with Prep for half of the first quarter and the game was just waiting for something to open the floodgates for one of the teams. This moment came in with 7:48 left in the first quarter when the Warriors fumbled the ball. A small mistake, but five plays later Prep punched it into the endzone. On the next drive for Westside, the Warriors went three and out, and a poor snap on fourth down caused a Prep recovery in the endzone for a touchdown.

Although the score was 14-0, Warrior fans stayed optimistic.

After two more failed drives for Westside, Prep converts on both of them making it 28-0 Prep.
Shortly after, Prep scores another field goal leaving the score 31-0 before heading into the locker room for halftime.

After halftime, the Warriors start to play with more pace and connect more passes. Even though they didn’t score a touchdown in the game, they put together a solid second half by forcing Prep to only one touchdown and putting together a couple of good drives. On one of these drives, Westside pushes the ball into the redzone and kicks a field goal to make it 38-3 to finish the game.

Although the outcome wasn’t what Warrior fans were expecting, one thing that stuck with the Westside community was our school pride. Our student section and parents cheered and supported until the very end, despite the score, to give our football team the support they deserved.

Overall, Westside picked up their game in the second half and in the end, it was the little mistakes that made the difference. With many new, young faces on Westside’s roster this year, the team is looking to develop over the course of the season.
