PREVIEW: New coaches for track and volleyball teams
There have been many new changes set in place for Westside High School this year, sports coaching staffs are the latest to experience changes.
Tobin Ehlers, Westside science teacher and track coach will be able to further pursue his love of track by being elevated to head coach the boys track team. He previously coached the boys distance runners.
“I would like to keep the track program very similar, it is a very positive program,” Ehlers said. “It is based on trying to improve young men and women and getting them to run faster and jump farther. Mr. Mckeever did a great job as head coach this year, but I see a few small changes that I can make next year.”
Sally Shepherd, boys hurdles and jump coach for track sees Ehlers being the head coach next year as a great opportunity for him and the whole program.
“We have a really tight coaching staff that gets along great and we have a lot of the same philosophies,” Shepherd said. “I really don’t see the program changing that much with Mr. Ehlers because we all have conversations on a regular basis on what we want to see happen with the athletes and what direction we want the team to go.”
Beth Peitzmeier, former Junior Varsity coach for the girls volleyball team is being elevated to coach the Varsity volleyball team next year.
“I want to keep building on what the previous coaches started, and I want the girls to work hard so that they can believe in themselves so that we can win more games and be successful,” Peitzmeier said.
Peitzmeier feels that some of her volleyball athletes lack the confidence that they need to succeed, and she is hoping to build that with her positive leadership qualities.
“It is one thing to want to be a good team and player, and a different thing to make that happen,” Peitzmeier said. “I am hopeful that we can change the girls outlook and help the team realize the work it takes to achieve the goals they desire.”
Peitzmeier’s number one goal for the season next year is to make it the most enjoyable and successful experience possible for the athletes.
“I am excited to find techniques to help them [volleyball athletes] put their goals into action, and successful steps they can take to reach their goals,” Peitzmeier said. “I am looking forward to helping the girls take ownership for the work they put in, and helping lead them on a successful journey.”
