Is #SnOMAhog Coming?
February 1, 2016
If you have a phone or follow twitter regularly, #snowmageddon or #SnOMAhog has been everywhere. The popular Twitter account “Mean Streets Omaha” (@MeanStreetsOMA) has retweeted dozens of pictures of empty shelves and the packed shopping carts of people preparing for the absolute worst.
But is this supposed blizzard really worth traveling to your neighborhood Walmart to stock up on the necessities?
Meteorologist Matt Serwe from KETV gave us some insight on what is really going to happen over the next few days.
“Early Tuesday morning there will be a snowfall of about two inches per hour which will continue through the time people will be leaving for school in the morning,” Serwe said.
So will we have a snow-day tomorrow? Serwe says that this is very likely to happen but he has no control over calling snow days. That, he says, is up to Westside administrators.
The possibility of a snow day on both Tuesday and Wednesday is slim. Serwe commented that the snow is expected to be more wet and heavy so it will not blow around.
“I would say we would need a foot of snow at least, in order to have back-to-back snow days and to shut down the city,” Serwe said.
In Nebraska history, there have only been a handful of instances where there has been over a foot of snow in one day. In most years, the total snowfall is less than a foot altogether.
