Peers help to improve each other’s grades through BETA Club

October 14, 2015

The BETA Club at Westside High School has a tutoring program for students who need assistance in classes. The Peer Tutoring Program is available for student’s who would like a better understanding of a course offered at Westside.

“To be a tutor students need to have finished the class with a B+ or higher, or are currently in the class with a B+ or higher.” said Kathy Toner, a guidance counselor at Westside.

If a student has a B+ or higher and is in the need of service learning hours the BETA club is the place to go.

“The expectation of the student is that they make a commitment to the person they are tutoring at least once a week in the IMC,” Toner said.

To get involved in the tutoring program students need to go to the guidance office. There are two papers to apply for the program: a blue paper for those interested in tutoring and a salmon colored paper for those who are in need of assistance.

“There is no deadline, if someone first semester doesn’t want to tutor decides next semester that they do they have the option,” Toner said.

The BETA Club can guarantee a tutor for the freshmen and sophomore classes, though due to numbers, upperclassmen are not guaranteed their own.

Still, the peer-tutoring program has had positive reviews since its establishment in 2014.

“We had a lot of success with it, they had many things to say about the program,” Toner said. “Many said their grades improved. The freshmen getting tutored have come back as a sophomore looking for tutors.”
