Softball team reaches a new mark for total wins

September 14, 2015

Working together as a team is something any sport has to do. But the softball team hasn’t only worked for each other, they have strived to improve for coach Kevin Dunn too.

Dunn has been coaching for nineteen years. Throughout the time that he has been coaching his focus has been to work together as a team, and make sure they take care of what they need to do, not really being concerned about the other team. While working as a team, you are also able to see the athletes progress from freshman year to senior year.

At the beginning of the season, the softball team had reached a new record of 400 wins. With that amount of wins, Westside softball has been placed in the top ten throughout Nebraska. The record number of wins is based on the amount of wins a team has. In 1993,  they started playing sanctions of high school softball. They take the number of wins each year, and add them to a record to keep track for each team.

“Well I knew going in that our first game of the year, we were going to set that mark of 400 wins. I think that it is a tribute all the kids that have played within the program. As well as all the hard work that the program has put in over the years,” Dunn said.

As of right now, Westside softball is at 406 wins. They are continuing to work as a team and aim for the state tournament this season.

“Every senior that has been in the program for all four years, up to this point at some point has been to a state tournament. The senior class right now, is in their last year so that’s one of the things that we are really trying to push, is to have them get that experience too,” Dunn said.  “It may happen it may not, but up to this point the program can be very proud of is that throughout that four year process.”

High school softball has been in the state of Nebraska for 22 years and Westside has had 11 state appearances, which puts them sixth in class A, yet another great accomplishment for the team.
