SLŌS’S TENNIS CORNER: Tennis heads to Metros, prepares for state
Welcome back to Slōs’s Tennis Corner! We have had an eventful and exciting week here at the Westside Tennis Program, and we are thrilled to share this experience with you!
This past week was interesting because we made a last-minute change to our tournament lineup. It is extremely rare for a coach to change their lineup this close to Metros and state, but Coach McMahon thought it would be beneficial to the team to make the switch. The previous lineup is as follows:
No. 1 singles: Jon Bass
No. 2 singles: Teigen Swanson
No. 1 doubles: Dillon Ketcham/Sean Padios
No. 2 doubles: Tom Kutilek/Max Slosburg
Here is the new lineup:
No.1 singles: Dillon Ketcham
No. 2 singles: Jon Bass
No. 1 doubles: Tom Kutilek/Sean Padios
No. 2 doubles: Max Slosburg/Teigen Swanson
It is a risky move to switch the lineup this close to Metros and state because player seeding in these tournaments could be greatly affected. Seeds are determined by records, and newly formed teams have short records. This makes it difficult to argue that the new team is better than teams that have been playing at a certain position throughout the season.
However, Coach McMahon was able to do a phenomenal job at the coaches’ seeding meeting to get Westside fair seeds. At No. 1 singles, Dillon Ketcham will be the three seed for Metros. At No. 2 singles, Jon Bass will be the four seed. At No. 1 doubles, Tom Kutilek and Sean Padios will be the five seed. At No. 2 doubles, Teigen Swanson and myself (Max Slosburg) will be the two seed.
All Metro and state matches will be played at Koch Tennis Center. Metros is all day on Wednesday Oct. 8, and finals will start at 2:30 on Oct. 9. The team would really appreciate your support, so please come out to join the tennis student section! Until next week, GO WESTSIDE TENNIS!
