SLŌS’S TENNIS CORNER: Catch up on week two varsity tennis action
Each week, varsity tennis player senior Max Slosburg will be providing us with a first-person look at the Westside varsity tennis team. Slosburg, who is called Slōs by the tennis team, will be keeping you up to date on all of the team’s matches and season outlook. His weekly update will be located on the Showcase, Sports Showcase and in the tennis team page. For tennis team results, visit the sports page. This is Slosburg’s week two recap.
Westside Wired’s readers have spoken, and Slōs’ s Tennis Corner is here to stay! I am delighted to be your guide through this epic journey that is high school tennis.
The first week of matches has been a rollercoaster. We started off by losing to a very talented Lincoln Southwest team, then continued on to defeat Millard South, Papillion-La Vista South and place third as a team at the Kearney Doubles Invitational. At our first home match against Papio South, we had a phenomenal turnout of fans! There were over five student spectators! Our entire team truly appreciates the support, and we have set a goal to have a student section consisting of over six students at our next home match Monday, Sept. 15 at 4 p.m. Please do your part to help us achieve this goal.
Although the team has had some success, we recently met with head coach Shaun McMahon to discuss alternative lineups. After a lengthy meeting, the team decided to try a different lineup in order to maximize our possible points in future tournaments. The new lineup is as follows:
No. 1 singles: senior Jon Bass
No. 2 singles: senior Teigen Swanson
No. 1 doubles: sophomore Dillon Ketcham and senior Sean Padios
No. 2 doubles: seniors Max Slosburg and Tom Kutilek
The old lineup had Ketcham at No. 1 singles, me at No. 2 singles, Padios and Kutilek at No. 1 doubles and Swanson and Bass at No. 2 doubles.
We are excited to try out our newest lineup, and we are looking forward to the success it may help us achieve. The team will be tested this week with difficult matches against Creighton Prep, Lincoln Southeast and Millard West. Follow @westsidewired on Twitter to stay up to date on our match results. Until next week, GO WESTSIDE TENNIS!
