Despite tough Metro meet, track teams ready for districts

Although Westside has a number of track athletes ranked near the top in District 1, Metros, held May 6-7 at Burke, proved to be a tough meet for both track teams. The boys team ended up with 19 points to champion Papillion-La Vista’s 116.5, and tied for 11th place. The girls had 20 to champion Millard North’s 86, and tied for 10th.

The boys distance runners, a number of whom have stood out this season, didn’t see any runners medal, although sophomore Jakob Phillips ran the open 800 for the first time and was the fastest of any Westsider this season, with a time of 2:03.65. He was 16th out of 36. Right behind him, in 17th place, was senior Stuart Willett, with a time of 2:03.73.

In the 3200, senior Jordan Wheeler ran 10:17 and placed eighth out of 30.

The 4 x 100, 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relay teams placed 9th out of 12, 11th out of 12, and 6th out of 11, respectively.

Senior Tom Young, however, was second out of 37 in the shot put and threw the farthest he has all season, a distance of 54-02.50. Junior Mitch Schenkelberg threw 121-04 in the discus and was 16th out of 37.

In the long jump, junior Kavon Neelon set a new personal record, 10 feet 10.25 inches, and was fourth out of 34. Junior Njali Kowa was seventh out of 34, with a mark of 20-03.00. Sophomore Collin Kirsch placed 14th.

In the girls 100-meter dash, sophomore Nachia Olsen placed 11th out of 34, and beat her previous best time by 0.14 seconds, running a 12.95.

In the 200, junior Regan Johnson made it through prelims and set a personal record of 26.40, placing eighth out of 35 overall. Although junior Hayley Krumwiede didn’t make it to the 200 finals, she placed 12th out of 35 in the prelims, with a time of 27.34 seconds.

In the 400, junior Annie Bradford placed 18th out of 39, with a time of 1:03.43.

Sophomore Bridget Mizener, Westside’s standout hurdler, made it to the finals in the 100 hurdles and placed sixth out of 29 overall, with a time of 16.26 seconds. Mizener was also fifth out of 35 in the 300 hurdles, with a time of 49.39.

The 4 x 100 relay team was sixth out of 11, the 4 x 400 team was 10th out of 12, and the 4 x 800 team was ninth out of 12.

Junior Regan Johnson beat her previous best mark in the long jump by three inches, and came in eighth out of 29 at Metros with a mark of 16-07.50. With a mark of 16-03.25, junior Hayley Krumwiede was 10th, and freshman Carlee Guyett tied for 11th and jumped 16 feet and 0.5 inch. Krumwiede was also second out of 23 in the long jump, with a mark of 36-03.50.

The boys team won the JV Metro Championships Friday, May 9 at Bryan, sweeping the individual distance events — sophomore Alec Reilly and juniors Aaron Duin and Mitchell Coziahr each won one. The 4 x 400 relay team also won, and there were several other good finishes from Westside boys. Overall, the team had 132 points, 43 more than the runner-up, Millard West.

Although varsity Metros, one of the toughest meets of the season, didn’t bring too many great finishes for Westsiders, there are still a number of athletes with a strong chance to qualify for state. The district meet will be held this Wednesday in Kearney.
