Boys Basketball Moves On To District Final
Last time the Westside boys basketball team (18-5) faced off against Millard North (5-19), the game went to double overtime before Westside was finally able to secure the win. This time was different.
Westside got off to a nine-point lead in the first quarter before slowly building its lead to the eventual 67-50 final score.
With a trip to the district final on the line, the Warriors were up 38-25 at the half. In the third quarter, the Warriors got the lead to 21, 43-22, when senior Sam Wilkinson drove in for a layup with 4:30 remaining in the quarter. Millard North cut the lead to 14 before Wilkinson hit a three-pointer to put the Warriors back up 17. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Warriors led 48-33.
In the fourth quarter, the Mustangs mounted a comeback, hitting back-to-back three-pointers to cut the lead to eight, 52-44 with 5:05 remaining in the game. But Westside weathered the storm, as senior Kevin Metoyer used a Euro step and layup to get the lead back to 10. Then, with 2:20 remaining senior Mike Kiger used his post moves to get the lead to 13, 61-48.
From there, the Warriors cruised to a victory.
