Warrior Athletic Club Hosting Winter Sports Spirit Night

Finding a parking spot may be a problem this Friday night at Westside. The school is hosting the Competition of Excellence, boys and girls varsity basketball vs. Bellevue West, the Warrior Invite and Senior Night for wrestling all this weekend. With all the winter sports falling on the same night, the Warrior Athletic Club (WAC) decided to take advantage of the situation and host a Spirit Night.

The Spirit Night will take place this Friday, January 29 and begin with the start of the girls varsity basketball game at 5:30. Students have the opportunity to participate in fun and exciting events happing at the beginning and halftime of the boys varsity basketball game. There will be a raffle in which spectators have the chance to win a WHS Stadium Chair and free popcorn. In addition to these prizes, students who attend both the girls and boys basketball games will have the ability to obtain an extra prize.

In addition to benefits, in the form of prizes, given to the spectators, WAC hopes that Spirit Night benefits the teams, as well.

“We hope to achieve recognition of our winter and spring sport athletes, and awareness of the athletic department here at Westside,” WAC co-chair Margaret Nelson said.

There are challenges of scheduling a Spirit Night on such a busy weekend, but through the help of Athletic Director Tom Kerkman, the athletic department and parent volunteers, WAC is confident they can pull it off.

“It is so much fun to work with the terrific WHS staff and students,” said Nelson. “The challenges turn into opportunities.”
