Westside is known across Nebraska and the Metropolitan area for its strong sense of community. A big part of what makes the Westside atmosphere so great is the events, rallies and parades it produces. Whether it’s the sports games, performances, homecoming, pep rallies or just students and members of the public showing up to support each other, it all brings the district together.
One major contributor to this success is Redshield, the official student section club sponsored by seniors on DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America). Their job is to lead student spirit at games, continue traditions, encourage participation, and ensure Westside continues to have the “best student section in the state”.
The Westside Dance, Cheer, Sparkles, and Band also engage the crowd at events, through half time performances at games, on the sidelines, and at rallies and parades. They work hard in practices behind the scenes to entertain the crowd and maintain school spirit through their presence.
Westside also has award-winning show choirs, quiz bowl, and many other clubs and activities. In addition, the community, including family and friends and supporters, coming together to watch and cheer on sports, competitions, and performances is a key part of what makes Westside such a positive atmosphere.
School spirit isn’t just about game day themes or winning records, it’s about community and sense of belonging and connection. These events bring together students with different talents and interests towards one goal. For this reason, it’s important that we show up for all sports and also to support our friends in the school play, show choir competitions, as well as club competitions. When the students have all graduated, the things we did for fun, will be the things we remember most, which is why it’s important for us to keep up the good work, and continue to come together in support of the Warriors.
