On Saturday, January 25th, the boys wrestling team delivered one of their most impressive performances of the season, securing 4th place out of 13 teams at the competitive Burke Invitational. With strong competition from schools across the region, the team rose to the challenge, demonstrating their depth, skill, and determination. A total of ten wrestlers finished in the top six of their respective weight classes, showcasing the team’s overall strength and versatility. Leading the charge was Chase Myers, who earned 1st place in the 165-pound weight class, marking a standout achievement not only for himself but also for the team as a whole. Myers’ victory was a testament to his hard work and dedication, setting the tone for the team’s successful day.
Other wrestlers who placed highly included Mason Bruber, who finished 3rd at 106 pounds, Charlie Hall, who took 3rd at 132 pounds, and Kameron Pilege, who finished 3rd at 144 pounds. Gable Jernigan earned 6th place at 150 pounds, while Anthoney Thomas secured 3rd at 157 pounds. Abraham Jiminez placed 5th at 175 pounds, and Tripp Taylor finished 5th at 190 pounds. Additionally, Graham Hoffart placed 3rd at 215 pounds, and Justin Parish earned 3rd place at 285 pounds.
Overall, it was an extremely dominant and strong showing for the entire team, who fought hard from start to finish. Their determination and effort were clear, and the results reflected that hard work. Every wrestler gave their best, pushing through each match with intensity and focus. The team’s high placements were a direct result of their commitment and preparation, proving they were ready to face tough competition head-on.
Sophomore Graham Hoffart reflected on his 3rd place finish.
“I felt good about where I placed, I wrestled well and it helped me place highly,” Hoffart said. “Some things I think I could improve on are my cardio and explosiveness in practice.”
Despite the strong performance, Hoffart acknowledged there are areas where he can continue to grow, keeping his focus on self-improvement and readiness for upcoming challenges. Hoffart also discussed the team’s overall success and what contributed to their high placement.
“We had a great week of practice, and the healthiest and fullest roster yet,” Hoffart said.
With a strong lineup and excellent preparation leading up to the meet, Hoffart highlighted how crucial both the team’s readiness and their physical condition were to their impressive results. The collective effort and dedication from each wrestler was evident, and the team is now set to carry that momentum into the final stretch of the season, with districts coming up quickly.
Head Coach Michael Jernigan shared his thoughts on the team’s preparation leading up to the meet, emphasizing their consistent approach.
“We didn’t do anything different. We continue to stick to the basics,” Jernigan said. “We were confident going in. It’s a good tournament to see a lot of teams where we can get some good quality wins, and it worked out for us.”
His confidence in the team’s preparation proved to be spot-on, as their performance exceeded expectations.
Jernigan also discussed his plans for maintaining the team’s momentum as they head into the final meets of the season.
“We’ve been more disciplined outside of the wrestling room than we’ve ever been. And that contributes to having a great performance in the wrestling room,” Jernigan said. “When kids are going to class and doing what they’re supposed to be doing, it prevents them from stress, and that allows them to focus more on the things that they need to focus on. So we’ll keep doing the same thing, and stick with our practice routine.”
His focus on discipline and consistency is key to their continued success as the season comes to an end.
With districts coming up on February 15th, Jernigan’s key to success is to keep the team disciplined and ensure they stay consistent in their approach. As the season moves into its final stretch, maintaining focus both on and off the mat will be essential. By sticking to the routine that has worked so well for them so far, Jernigan believes the team will be ready for the increased pressure of the postseason. The goal is clear: stay sharp, stay committed, and keep building on the momentum they’ve gained. With the team’s strong foundation and steady progress, they are well-positioned to make a strong push as they head into the final meets of the season.
