Boys soccer beats Grand Island:

Thursday, May 15, Westside took on Grand Island at Morrison Stadium. The teams took a 0-0 tie into the second half before senior Joe Dahir scored on a volley off of a corner from senior Daniel Shonka with 25 minutes remaining in the match. Minutes later, junior Robert Wiseman tapped the ball in off of a pass directly in front of the goal by freshman Hunter Kruse off of a Shonka free kick.

With 11 minutes remaining in the match, Grand Island got its first goal. Westside goalkeeper senior Quinn Nelson was lined up to catch a shot from the right side of the 18 yard line by a Grand Island attacker, but Dahir slid in to try to deflect the ball away from the goal. Unfortunately for the Warriors, Dahir’s slide helped the ball get by Nelson, who was unable to shift towards the ball. The play made it 2-1, the final score of the match.

Westside shuts out Creighton Prep:

Westside took on rival Creighton Prep in the state tournament semifinals. Here, the Warriors got two goals before halftime and rode a 2-0 lead to a victory.

Wiseman opened up scoring for the Warriors with just under 11 minutes remaining in the first half. Off of a throw in by Kruse, Wiseman jumped in front of the Prep goalie to head the ball into the net, giving Westside a 1-0 lead. The goal gave Wiseman his fourth goal in four games.

Three minutes later, senior Lukas Greene, who has been injured most of the season, scored what might be the goal of the tournament. Off of a corner kick by senior Nate Lippincott, McCann headed the ball to Greene. Greene, who is left-footed, used his off-foot to bend the ball into the left upper 90 from the middle of the 18 yard line. The Prep goalkeeper was left frozen in the center of the goal, and watched the ball go by, putting the Warriors up 2-0, the final score of the game. State championship game:

After winning a district championship, the Westside boys varsity soccer team won two straight matches in the state tournament to reach the NSAA Class A State Championship Game.

Westside plays Lincoln Southwest Tuesday, May 20, at Morrison Stadium for the championship. The game is at 7:45 p.m. According to @WHS_Themes, the “Championship Game Itinerary” is Hawaiian shirts, swimsuits, sunglasses, towels and bucket hats.

Class of 2014 makes history:

For the first time in Westside history, the football team, boys basketball team and boys soccer team all made it to the state tournament championship game in the same school year.

Also, the victory over Prep was the first time Westside has beaten Prep by more than a goal under varsity head coach John Brian’s tenure at Westside.
