Wednesday, May 14, the Westside boys varsity golf team competed at the Metro Tournament at Benson Golf Course. The team, which has been led by senior Tom Stegman and sophomore AJ Nolin all season, was coming off of a fourth place finish at the Millard South Invite in which it shot a 325 (the added scores of the top four Westside scorers). At the Metro Tournament, the team shot six strokes worse, finishing with a 331.

Westside’s five golfers for the day were Stegman, senior Nate Selby, junior Max Petersen, Nolin and sophomore Hunter Tessin. The team’s four scorers were Nolin, Stegman, Tessin and Petersen, shooting 80, 81, 85 and 85, respectively.

Stegman said the course conditions at Benson, which was the team’s home course last season before it switched to the Knolls, were fairly good. He said the greens were rolling nicely and there was no wind, but the pin placements were tough. Despite the course conditions being good, Stegman said the team did shoot a bit worse than average.

“We were saving our best rounds for districts that are coming up on Monday,” Stegman said.

Westside’s district tournament, hosted by Lincoln East, will be at Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln. The team is in a district with Lincoln East, Grand Island, Lincoln Northeast, Lincoln Pius X, Lincoln Southwest, Millard South and Omaha South. To reach the state tournament as a team, Westside needs to finish in the top three at the district tournament, and for players to qualify individually, they need to finish in the top 10 of individuals. Westside has not made it as a team for eight years.

Creighton Prep won the Metro tournament. The individual champion was Garret Morehead from Bellevue West. Morehead shot a 74, tying with another player, but won the tournament in a playoff.

Check back Monday for district results.
