Sent Home for Wrong Jersey?

A fifth grader named Keila Penner was sent home from her elementary school for wearing an Ottawa Senators jersey. Even though the family lives in Montreal, they are big Senators fans. Upon hearing the news, the Senators team sent her family tickets to the game against the Montreal Canadiens.

On the day of game 1 of the Canadiens-Senators playoff series, students were allowed to wear Montreal jerseys instead of their school uniforms. Keila proudly wore her Ottawa colors and was sent to the principles office. She was told to wear a different shirt or be sent home. Keila refused to change. According to yahoo.com, school authorities asked Keila to remove her Senators shirt saying that they were acting in her best interests.

When the Ottawa owner heard the story he invited her family to sit in his personal suite for game 4 and sent a limo to being them to the arena.

Personally, I’m glad that she didn’t change her shirt. The school can not dictate what team jersey the students have to wear. As long as it does not disrupt the learning environment, students are allowed to support any team they chose. I am proud that she stood her ground and supported her team.
