Sophomore Madilyn Siebler and Senior Izzy Nahayo celebrated after scoring a point earlier this season.

On Tuesday, September 16th, Westside varsity volleyball took on top-ranked Papillion La-Vista at home. Papillion-La Vista won the match 3-0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-18). set Westside lost to Papillion with 18-25 on the board. Head Coach Korrine Bowers said this match seems more like a learning lesson.

“Going into it, the biggest thing was that I wanted the girls to get better. To compete and have fun, we have been making little steps towards the top. Getting better everyday. We stuck with our original lineup that we played last weekend,” Bowers said, “We had some ideas about ‘ok maybe there’s a better lineup’.”

Along with experimenting with new formations, Coach Bowers said she is impressed with her team holding against Papillion.

“We lost our first set, the girls played timid, not aggressive. We made a lineup change. Everybody was still playing but maybe in a different role. We started off a lot stronger, built some confidence during that second set and actually stayed with them during the third set,.” Bowers said.

Sophomore Madilyn Siebier, outside hitter on the varsity team, feels this experience is helping with her leadership.

“I feel last night we definitely held our own against Papio who was undefeated. I’m happy with it,” Siebier said. “Last night wasn’t my best night as a leader. It’s definitely something that I’m working on. The seniors did a really good job. I feel it was ok.”

Thursday, September 19th, Westside varsity volleyball will take on Burke at home. Siebier feels confident about the match.

“I’m excited for [Thursday]. I feel Burke isn’t the strong team in Class A. I feel it will be a good opportunity to work on our offense and running new things on our technique that will help us play better against ranked teams,” Siebier said.
