Sophomore Avante Dickerson evades defenders against Columbus in week eight.

The Westside football team suffered their first loss of the season on Thursday, October 18th when they went on the road to play the Millard South Patriots. Despite the loss, they finished the regular season with an 8-1 record. This is the first time the Warriors have held an 8-1 record since the 2013 team that made the trip to the state championsh

Westside went on the board first when sophomore quarterback Cole Payton connected to junior Grant Tagge for the touchdown with 7:51 left in the first. The Warriors did not score for the rest of the half and trailed 9-7 at halftime.

The Patriots scored first in the second half as they hit a field goal to extend the lead to 12-7 with 5:04 left in the third quarter. The Warriors came back to take the lead when senior Dylan Packett grabbed a touchdown catch to make it 13-12 Warriors with 11:57 left in the final quarter. Later in the 4th, Payton was sacked in the endzone for a safety to make it 14-13 in favor of Millard South, which was the final score.

Senior punter Cade Jochum said that the loss is hard yet he is confident about his team’s abilities.

“Well, it was rough because we made a lot of mistakes throughout the game. We were definitely the better team but we just didn’t show it with the way we performed. All we can do is look ahead and learn from it,” Jochum said.

Jochum also mentioned motivation coming from the loss.

“I feel like we are motivated coming off our first loss. We don’t know who we play yet but no matter who it is we are going to have a great week of preparation” Jochum said.

The Warriors will be at home their first playoff game. Official brackets are expected Saturday. Stay tuned to Westside Wired on social media for updates.
