It was a classic high school football atmosphere with an October chill and hotdogs on the grill all in front of the homecoming crowd when the Warrior football team defeated the Elkhorn South Storm 35-21 on Friday, October 5th.

The Warriors put the first points on the board when junior Jack Bush connected on a field goal to make it 3-0 early. That lead lasted until the Storm scored on a short run to make it 7-3 when you include the PAT near the end of the opening quarter. Westside answered with a 55-yard Avante Dickerson run to put them back in the lead. The score at the end of the first was 10-7 Warriors, and that lead diminished by halftime, leaving Westside trailing 14-10 at the break.

The second half started its scoring just as the first when Bush hit a 37-yard field goal, which cut Elkhorn South’s lead tot 14-13. Another touchdown from Avante Dickerson, who finished the night with 146 rush yards, put Westside the 19-14. The Warriors went for two and were successful as junior Trevor Barajas scored making it 21-14. Later in the third, Westside had a 52 yard touchdown to extend the lead to 28-14 which was the score at the end of the third. The Warriors put on another touchdown in the fourth when Nolan Miller-Johnston hopped on a fumble caused by a blocked punt, making it 35-14 before Elkhorn South cut the lead to 35-21. The Warriors held on to win the game by that score. Miller-Johnston said that touchdown was special for him.

“Being a lineman, scoring a touchdown, you don’t get to do that often,” Miller-Johnston said. “So, it meant the world to me.”

Sophomore Cade Haberman was happy about his team’s performance.

“I thought we played well,” Haberman said. “We responded after a bad first half very well and played Warrior football. It was a great team effort. On to Columbus! Couldn’t be more proud of my brothers.”
