Senior Dylan Packett celebrates after making a spectacular touchdown catch

The Westside varsity football team held their undefeated record with a 49-13 win over the Gretna Dragons on Friday, September 14. This is the Warriors’ fourth win of the season and their third in blowout fashion.

Sophomore Avante Dickerson put the first points on the board with a 35 yard touchdown with 7:39 left in the first quarter. The Warriors would then recover a fumble at the one yard line and score once more thanks to a touchdown by senior Sam Parsonage. The storm of scoring would continue after starting quarterback Cole Payton connected a pass to senior Joe Stegman for a 75 yard touchdown with 3:59 left in the first. The Warriors would get one more score in the quarter when Payton threw his second touchdown to senior Dylan Packett with only 17 ticks left in the first. The score was 28-0 going into the second.

The second quarter was less consistent in terms of scoring. The Warriors did not make the endzone until Payton connected with Packett on a screen pass with only 1:05 left in the half. The Warrior defense allowed their first points of the game as Gretna finally found the endzone just before halftime. The score was 35-7 Warriors heading into the break.

The Warriors scored 14 points in the second half. The first touchdown came when Stegman made a terrific catch in the third and the second touchdown was scored by junior Bodie Harrell with 7:25 left in the fourth. After one more touchdown by Gretna, the Warriors came out of the game with a 49-13 final score.

It was an excellent victory for the Warriors but not without its costs. Unfortunately junior Cal Weidemann suffered an leg injury. Stegman showed appreciation for his squad’s performance but seemed concerned about his teammates injury.

“Our O-Line and D-Line played great. Prayers out to Cal Weideman, we wish him the best,” Stegman said.

Senior Kellen Goc, who has been injured all season, gave credit to his team for playing a very solid game.

“We went out and executed the game plan early. Really set the tone physically. A lot of guys stepped up and we played a complete game,” Goc said.

The Warriors will continue their season against the Creighton Prep Junior Jays on Thursday at Burke High School.
