PREVIEW: Cabaret

PREVIEW%3A+Cabaret

On Sunday, November 5, broadway music will fill the auditorium at Westside, as Cabaret takes place.

“Cabaret is where all the show choirs and choirs perform, and there’s a lot of stage lighting,” freshman show choir member Olivia Nielsen said. “It’s kind of our opening performance but it’s also a fundraiser for the choir foundation.”

Cabaret will consist of two shows, one at three o’clock and one at seven o’clock, concessions, and a raffle. Choir director Doran Johnson sees this event as a way to fundraise for the choir parents association.

“Cabaret is a concert basically, but it’s also a big fundraising event for our vocal music parents association,” Johnson said. “In addition to the ticket sales, we have raffles and concessions. We’re trying to raise money for the program, but we do it by putting on a show rather than selling cookie dough and candles.”

This year, the theme of the show is “Broadway Today.”

“We pick a theme each year so we’re not doing, you know, traditional, classic, choral literature,” Johnson said. “This year we’re focusing on music that’s from Broadway shows that are currently running or have just recently ran so we’re looking at Dear Evan Hansen, Hamilton, things like that.”

Students have been preparing for this event with diligence.

“We had almost 70 students audition for a solo spot on the show, and we were able to put 12 in each show, so those students have been working independently,” Johnson said. “This will be the first time that the show choirs have performed in public, they’ve been working since August on that, and then the choirs- we had a concert about the end of September- so they’ve been working about four or five weeks on their set of music.”

On top of seeing the technology of the hired lighting company during the performance, Nielsen is also excited to see all the work of the choir members come together.

“I’m most excited for just to see everything come together because we’ve been working on a lot of different pieces,” Nielsen said. “I think it’ll be super cool to see it all come together.”

If you are interested in attending, tickets will be available at the door with a price of $10 for adults and $7 for students and senior citizens.
