Student directors respond to Project 66

Recently, staff writer Connor Tucker wrote an opinion piece regarding the recent showing of Project 66, a group of plays directed by Westside students. The directors of Project 66 responded:

Westside Wired, let’s be frank,

While reading Connor Tucker’s opinion piece regarding the recent production, Project 66, we found quite a bit of incorrect information. We’d like to start by recognizing Tucker’s viewpoint. We recognize this article as an opinion piece, but the “facts” the author included to back up his opinion weren’t facts at all. In fact, they contradicted the truth.

Westside Wired has a consistent failure when it comes to check facts. The information about this show alone has been wrong on multiple occasions, first in Monica Siegel’s article in mid-November. She wrote that Project 66 is an annual event, which is untrue.

In Tucker’s recent article, he states Project 66 occurs bi-annually, which is also untrue.

“Wired has conflicting information within their own articles, and both times the truth was not included. To get the facts straight, Project 66 has happened twice now, once in spring of 2014 and once this fall. We are unsure of when it will occur again.”

We’d also like to point out that usually someone reviewing a piece of theatre should have some knowledge on the subject matter prior to their review. While some of the critiques of the production were valid, most were about things out of the director’s control. Opinion writers are certainly entitled to their opinions – and we’re glad to hear them. We wanted to take this chance to explain ours as well. We worked hard on our productions and any feedback is appreciated. Overall, we were generally disappointed that the critique focused not on our capabilities as directors, but if it was generally pleasing to an audience member with minimal theatre experience. Next time, please check your facts and be clearer in your critiques.

Respectfully,

Madison Hoy, Amy Conaway, Natalie Day, and Zach Bowen
