Scholastic Journalism Week

The Journalism Education Association has made Feb 17-23 Scholastic Journalism Week. This week is dedicated to highlighting the different publications at Westside. The five publications are Lance, Shield, Xanadu,Westside Wired and Warrior Television. Nathan Moseley, magazine advisor describes the point of this week.

“Raising awareness to the student body about mediums that are out there for them, how they can have their voice heard.”

The magazine class publishes two magazines. Craze comes out monthy and Xanadu comes out in the spring. This year Craze won third in its category of best of show at the national journalism convention. The editor and chief of  the Magazine staff is Jordan Meredith.

The Lance is the school newspaper and comes out once a month. The editors-in-chief are Joe Hack and Emma Johanningsmeier. This year the Lance won eighth in it’s category of Best of Show at the national Journalism Convention. The Lance also won a Cornhusker at the state conference, meaning it is considered one of the best newspapers in the state.

The Shield is the yearbook that highlights all the events that occur during the school year and comes out in the spring. The editors-in-chief of the yearbook are Sonia Schrager and Amy Elliot-Miesel. This year at the state convention the Shield won a cornhusker meaning it is one of the best yearbooks in the state.

Westside Wired is an online journalism publication that publishes news briefs, galleries and videos. This year at the state convention Westside Wired also won a Cornhusker, making it one of the best scholastic journalism websites in the state. Westside Wired is in its third year.

Warrior Television is a news broadcast that comes out every two weeks.  The producers are Grace Hoyme, Anna Skold, Brigit Mahoney and Sydney Wieseler. This year at the national journalism convention Warrior Television received sixth place in its Best of Show category. The broadcast also received a Cornhusker at the state convention.
